Did you know that IDEA stands for Individuals with Disabilities Education Act?​

  • ​​​​​The IDEA was put in place to ensure that all children have a free public education available to them

  • Special education is designed to meet the unique needs of a child and prepare them for further education, employment, and independent living

  • The IDEA protects the rights of children with disabilities as well as their parents


​Did you know that FAPE stands for stands for free appropriate public education?

  • A free appropriate public education must be available to all children residing in the state of Rhode Island

  • This includes all children who have disabilities or learning difficulties

  • FAPE is available to any child with a disability, one who needs special education or any related services even if the child has not failed courses and is advancing from grade to grade

  • The State must also grant all nonacademic services that are granted in public schools such as extracurricular services and physical education

  • Nothing in this act requires that children be classified by their disability

Did you know ESY stands for extended school year services?

  • ​If necessary, children with disabilities and learning differences are entitled to extended school year services

  • These services are determined on an individual basis

  • Public agencies cannot limit ESY to certain categories of disabilities or limit the type, duration, or amount of those services

  • ESY is available at no cost for the parents
